You say "statist" like it's a bad thing

So here's the deal with statism:

Power accumulates. If nothing is done to prevent it, some entity is going to accumulate power. Historically, the primary power centers have been religions, governments, paramilitary groups, and wealthy individuals/corporations.

And once one of those groups acquires power, they tend to be inclined to hold onto it. They will oppress individuals to ensure that their influence is not diminished.

Obviously, the optimal situation is to stop that from happening. You want each individual to have as much agency over their own life as possible. But people are generally awful to each other, and somebody is going to accumulate that sweet, sweet power.

Now look back over that list of entities that accumulate power. Which of them can have checks against that accumulation built in? The answer is, tragically governments. Governments tend to be the only one of these institutions that build opposition to themselves into their own structure. Nobody impeaches the pope. Nobody fires the board of directors. Nobody court martials the comondante.

So I generally lean towards letting the government be in charge of things. Because at the end of the day, I'd rather deal with the guy who has to fill out a requisition form before he can get the bullets to threaten me with.
