Cynicism and Optimism

Despite not believing in “good people”, I have a strong tendency to try to treat everyone as if they are ultimately trying to be “good people.” I have two trends in my own thinking that I’ve recently realized concerning this. They could probably be mottos, but they might not be very good ones?

  • Never ascribe to malice what can be attributed to greed - Ultimately, most people don’t do anything out of any intent to cause others real harm. We’re just jerks to each other because we’ve got selfish ends that we want to achieve, and we don’t really care that others get hurt in the process.

  • Never ascribe to malice what can be ascribed to stupidity - Even when there’s no selfish motivation for someone to have harmed you, odds are good they just don’t even know. They did something that hurt you due to ignorance and apathy not antipathy.

So… I guess my point is… be nice to each other if at all possible? And please don’t take advantage of the fact that I’m not usually assuming the worst about you?
